GMX and WEB.DE: turn on IMAP so your move works
At GMX and WEB.DE, access for email programs is often switched off. Every program, Mailovo included, then reports that the password is wrong even though it is correct. You can change this in two minutes. GMX and WEB.DE belong to the same company, so the steps are the same for both.
In short: Sign in in your browser, open the settings, choose “POP3/IMAP”, allow access, save.
How to turn on IMAP
- Sign in to GMX or WEB.DE in your browser, not in the app.
- In the E-Mail area, open the settings (Einstellungen).
- Choose POP3/IMAP-Abruf in the menu.
- Tick the option that allows access via POP3 and IMAP and click Save (Speichern).
- Enter your normal GMX or WEB.DE password at Mailovo.
The providers change their labels from time to time. If you can’t find something, search the settings for “IMAP”.
With two-factor sign-in
If you have turned on two-factor authentication, your normal password won’t work for email programs. Create an app-specific password (anwendungsspezifisches Passwort) in the security settings and enter that at Mailovo. You can delete it there after the move.
After the move
If you don’t use an email program like Outlook or Thunderbird, you can switch access off again after the move and forwarding. Your mailbox is then only reachable through the website and the app.
