New email address: where you need to change it
Once your emails have moved, the part that needs the most patience begins: your new address has to go everywhere the old one is stored. This list helps you not to forget anything important.
In short: First everything to do with money, contracts and authorities. Then every account you sign in to with the address. Finally contacts and newsletters.
Why the order matters
Many services use your email address to sign in. If you ever forget your password there, the reset link goes to the old address. If that account has been closed, in the worst case you can no longer get into your account. So change the address first where the most is at stake.
Money and contracts
- Bank and online banking, credit card, PayPal
- Insurance (health, liability, car, home contents)
- Electricity, gas, water, rent or property management
- Phone, internet and TV contract
- Streaming services and other subscriptions
Authorities and health
- Tax office (in Germany: ELSTER)
- Health insurance and pension insurance
- Doctors’ practices, pharmacy apps, appointment portals
- Your town or council, if you have an online account there
Accounts you sign in to with your address
- Apple ID, Google Account, Microsoft account
- Online shops such as Amazon, eBay and Zalando
- Social networks such as Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn
- Travel and transport: railways, airlines, booking sites, car sharing
- Password manager and cloud storage
You usually change the address under “Account”, “Profile” or “Personal details”. Many services then send a confirmation email to the new address.
Work, clubs and contacts
- Employer, school, university
- Clubs, volunteering, church
- Family, friends and acquaintances: a short email to everyone in your address book is enough
Newsletters: tidy up now
Moving is a good opportunity to unsubscribe from newsletters you no longer read. Only enter your new address where you really want the post.
